Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival a feast for all senses
From June 20 to 23, the Ottawa Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival will celebrate the different aspects of Indigenous culture at Vincent Massey Park. The festival strives to raise awareness about Indigenous cultures and issues, while also recognizing the contributions of Inuit, First Nations and Métis peoples.
The highlight of the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival is the competitive powwow, which attracts Indigenous performers from the across the country. It’s a big, glorious coming together of drummers, jingle dress dancers and throat singers, resplendent in elaborately decorated traditional garb.
The big party — the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival — is happening until June 23 at Vincent Massey Park off Heron Road, and admission is free. The pow wow competition is happening Saturday at noon and 6 p.m., and on Sunday at noon. Musicians, dancers, vocalists and DJs will be performing on stage from Friday through Sunday, and there will be bingo in the Algonquin language and an Indigenous culinary competition.
Celebrations for the 2019 National Indigenous Peoples day takes place this weekend at Vincent Massey Park. At the heart of the festival is the summer solstice competition pow wow that attracts some of the best dancers and singers from across North America. The international pow wow competition runs from June 22 to 23. Prizes worth up to $75,000 will be given out to the best dancers and drummers.
It wasn’t hundreds, but rather thousands of capital residents joined in the celebrations of National Indigenous Peoples Day over the weekend. The annual Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival took place at Vincent Massey Park from June. 20 – June 23 and provided visitors an opportunity to learn and share in the celebrations of Indigenous cultures.
The culinary events introduced at last year’s Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival were such a hit that they are coming back again this year, but with a new twist. When the festival that celebrates First Nations, Inuit and Métis culture begins at Vincent Massey Park in Ottawa on Friday, June 21, Indigenous chefs from across Canada will be there to compete in the inaugural INDIGICHEF Culinary Competition.
The Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival & Competition Pow Wow starts on Thursday at Vincent Massey Park, in Ottawa, and continues through Sunday. This year, the festival celebrates UN International Year of Indigenous Languages. The heart of the Festival is the International Competition Pow Wow on June 22nd and 23rd. This competition attracts the best singers and dancers from across Turtle Island (aka North America) to compete for $75,000 in prizes.
