National Indigenous History Month at the Canadian Museum of History

Experience the excitement of song, drum and dance with live Indigenous performances in the Museum’s beautiful Grand Hall. Join us for a special weekend at the Museum where performers from Mādahòkì Farm will bring you and your family closer to the cultural practices of Inuit throat-singing and pow-wow drum and dance, including hoop dancing. Mādahòkì Farm specializes in the production of immersive activities and performances that reflect and respect Indigenous wisdom and diversity.
This activity is offered in English and French and is included with Museum admission.

Rejoignez-nous pour un week-end spécial au musée où les artistes de la ferme Mādahòkì vous feront découvrir les pratiques culturelles du chant de gorge inuit et de la danse et du tambour de pow-wow, y compris la danse du cerceau. La ferme Mādahòkì se spécialise dans la production d’activités et de performances immersives qui reflètent et respectent la sagesse et la diversité autochtones.

The Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards (SSIMAs) On Tour is set to spotlight outstanding Indigenous music, featuring free performances by previous SSIMAs nominee Sandrine Masse and SSIMAs winner Logan Staats at the National Arts Centre. This event promises to be a celebration of rich cultural heritage and exceptional talent in the Indigenous music community.

Sandrine Masse started her career as a violist of classical background. Her love for folk, prog rock and traditional music brought her to collaborate with artists and collectives of diverse genres and from around the globe, as a violist, back-up singer and composer. Holding a diploma from L’École nationale de la chanson and having won First prize and People’s choice award in the songwriting contest Chante en français, Sandrine releases in 2022 a first ep, L’ours noir, that blends folk, traditional rhythms and alt rock. Her songs make us travel through atmospheres of timeless soundscapes, that weave into stories she tells from her perspective as a Wendat and Québecoise artist.

Mohawk folk and soul musician Logan Staats began as a diamond in the rough on the streets of Brantford, Ontario. He played the local circuit for years before his 2015 debut release ‘Goodbye Goldia’, an unvarnished yet hard hitting folk album. He went on to win CTV’s ‘The Launch’ in 2018, gaining commercial success and touring across North America and Europe.
Les prix Solstice d’été pour la musique autochtone (Prix SÉMA) en tournée mettront en lumière la musique autochtone exceptionnelle, avec des performances gratuites de la précédente nominée aux Prix SÉMA, Sandrine Masse, et du gagnant des Prix SÉMA, Logan Staats, au Centre national des Arts. Cet événement promet d’être une célébration du riche patrimoine culturel et du talent exceptionnel de la communauté musicale autochtone.

Sandrine Masse a commencé sa carrière en tant que violoniste de formation classique. Son amour pour la musique folk, le rock progressif et la musique traditionnelle l’a amenée à collaborer avec des artistes et des collectifs de genres divers et du monde entier, en tant que violoniste, choriste et compositrice. Diplômée de l’École nationale de la chanson et lauréate du premier prix et du prix du public au concours de composition Chante en français, Sandrine a sorti en 2022 un premier EP, L’ours noir, qui mélange folk, rythmes traditionnels et rock alternatif. Ses chansons nous font voyager à travers des atmosphères de paysages sonores intemporels, tissés dans des récits qu’elle raconte de son point de vue d’artiste wendat et québécoise.

Beading is one of the defining mediums of contemporary Indigenous art on this continent, and this landmark exhibition brings much-needed critical attention to the breadth and impact of this practice. From early beads made of seeds and shells, to trade beads and computer pixels, Indigenous artists have long used beadwork to tell stories, honour loved ones, and celebrate beauty. As they embrace techniques and knowledge passed from previous generations, today’s Indigenous artists are using beading to address concerns and concepts related to history, decolonization and resistance.
Ranging from wearable art and portraiture, to installation and video, the works in Radical Stitch connect past and present, as they imagine new worlds. With humour, poignant testimony, and political and social commentary, this exciting exhibition examines the contemporary and transformative aspects of beading through the innovative works of artists and the tactile beauty of the medium. Organized and circulated by the MacKenzie Art Gallery. The MacKenzie receives ongoing support from the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, SaskCulture, City of Regina, University of Regina, and Saskatchewan Arts Board. Tour supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. Curated by Sherry Farrell Racette, Michelle LaVallee and Cathy Mattes.

Le perlage est l’un des médiums déterminants de l’art autochtone contemporain, et cette exposition phare attire une attention critique bien nécessaire sur l’étendue et l’impact de cette pratique. Des premières perles fabriquées à partir de graines et de coquillages aux perles de commerce et aux pixels informatiques, les artistes autochtones ont depuis longtemps utilisé le perlage pour raconter des histoires, honorer leurs proches et célébrer la beauté. En embrassant les techniques et les connaissances transmises par les générations précédentes, les artistes autochtones d’aujourd’hui utilisent le perlage pour aborder des questions et des concepts liés à l’histoire, à la décolonisation et à la résistance.
Des œuvres d’art portables et des portraits aux installations artistiques et à la vidéo, les œuvres de Radical Stitch relient le passé et le présent, tout en imaginant de nouveaux mondes. Avec humour, témoignages poignants et commentaires politiques et sociaux, cette exposition passionnante examine les aspects contemporains et transformateurs du perlage à travers les œuvres innovantes des artistes et la beauté tactile du médium. Organisée et diffusée par la Galerie d’art MacKenzie. La Galerie MacKenzie bénéficie d’un soutien continu de la South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, du Conseil des arts du Canada, de SaskCulture, de la Ville de Regina, de l’Université de Regina et du Conseil des arts de la Saskatchewan.

This interactive workshop introduces participants of all ages to Indigenous Music. You will learn about this “heartbeat” of mother earth before learning some stomp dance songs on traditional rattles.

What does it sound like? Exploring Indigenous Language
In this participants will learn about the Mohawk language and the history behind it. They will learn this by looking at the Mohawk alphabet and using it to pronounce the words correctly. By doing this we are able to teach the uniqueness of indigenous languages.

Corn Husk Dolls: Story & Craft
Participants of all ages will learn the story behind one of history’s oldest toys, the corn husk doll. They will learn the importance of community through these dolls. After talking about the traditional story students will be able to make their own corn husk doll.

À quoi ça ressemble ? Exploration de la langue autochtone
Dans cet atelier, les participants apprendront la langue mohawk et l’histoire qui se cache derrière. Ils apprendront cela en regardant l’alphabet mohawk et en l’utilisant pour prononcer correctement les mots. En faisant cela, nous sommes en mesure d’enseigner l’unicité des langues autochtones.

Poupées en cosse de maïs : histoire et artisanat
Les participants de tous âges apprendront l’histoire derrière l’un des jouets les plus anciens de l’histoire, la poupée en cosse de maïs. Ils apprendront l’importance de la communauté à travers ces poupées. Après avoir parlé de l’histoire traditionnelle de ces poupées, les élèves pourront fabriquer leur propre poupée en cosse de maïs.

As part of Indigenous History Month celebrations in the neighbourhood, the ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA) is partnering with the local social enterprise Assembly of Seven Generations (A7G) and their flagship boutique, Adaawewigamig, located in the historic ByWard Market building, for the Summer Solstice edition of the ByWard Night Market.
This event will feature Indigenous makers, artisans, and a fashion show!
This is an accessible outdoor event. Free to attend, but shopping is encouraged.
